Solar neutrino physics and the Borexino experiment

Monday December 13th, 12:00 - Seminar room

Speaker: Marco Pallavicini (Universita' di Genova / INFN)

Abstract:

Solar neutrino physics is an interesting field of research for both fundamental physics and solar physics. Low energy solar neutrinos, which provide 99% of the flux, are a unique probe to the Sun's interior and may help solving fundamental solar physics problem.
At the same time, neutrino physics is still a very active field, and many potentially interesting effects can be discovered via a careful study of the solar neutrino spectra. In this seminar, after a pedagogical introduction to solar neutrino physics and a short history of the field, I will discuss the unique features of the Borexino experiment, its recent results and the future perspectives.
