MAGIC telescopes trace origin of a rare cosmic neutrino

For the first time, astrophysicists have localised the source of a cosmic neutrino originated outside of the Milky Way. With high probability, the neutrino comes from a blazar, an active black hole at the centre of a distant galaxy in the Orion constellation.

Per primera vegada, els astrofísics han localitzat la font d'un neutrí còsmic provinent de fora de la Via Làctia. Amb alta probabilitat, el neutrí prové d'un blazar, un forat negre actiu en el centre d'una galàxia distant a la constel·lació d'Orió. Com van aconseguir els científics fer aquest descobriment? Van combinar un senyal de neutrí d'IceCube amb mesures dels telescopis Fermi-LAT i MAGIC així com d'altres instruments. Aquesta observació de multi-missatger podria proporcionar pistes per resoldre un misteri: l'origen dels raigs còsmics.

ATLAS observes interaction between Higgs boson and top quark, the heaviest known elementary particle

The ATLAS Collaboration at CERN has announced the observation of Higgs bosons produced together with a top-quark pair. Observing this extremely rare process is a significant milestone for the field of High-Energy Physics. It allows physicists to test critical parameters of the Higgs mechanism in the Standard Model of particle physics.

Since 2011 the IFAE-ATLAS group has led searches for ttH production, focusing on the dominant Higgs boson decay mode into a bottom-antibottom-quark pair (H->bb)
