En un seminario científico en el CERN, el Laboratorio Europeo de Física de Partículas, se han presentado hoy los últimos resultados sobre la búsqueda de la partícula más famosa: el bosón de Higgs. Los experimentos ATLAS y CMS han observado una nueva partícula, con una masa de unos 125 GeV, que coincide hasta donde se ha podido analizar con el Higgs. El Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE) es miembro de la colaboración ATLAS, y el único centro catalán que ha participado en esta investigación.

Neutrinos and dark matter

Abstract:

I review the state of the art for candidates of Dark Matter, focusing also on the possibility that keV-sterile neutrinos constitute the Dark Matter particle. In this context, I summarize several models that can explain the required mass pattern in the right-handed neutrino sector.

Barcelona, June 20th 2012. Today, the European Space Agency (ESA) has officially adopted the Euclid space mission. The Euclid Consortium is the largest international collaboration of astronomers, a team of experts from around the world with the challenge of building a satellite able to unravel what the universe is made of.  A Spanish consortium made up of dozens of researchers and engineers from different research centers in Barcelona, ​​Tenerife, Cartagena and Madrid will collaborate in this project, that is part of the ESA's "Cosmic Vision" and aims to build and put the satellite into orbit this decade.

Seiberg duality versus hidden local symmetry

Abstract:

It is widely believed that the emergent magnetic gauge symmetry of SQCD is analogous to a hidden local symmetry (HLS). I explore this idea in detail, and show how one can derive the (spontaneously broken) magnetic theory by applying the HLS formalism to spontaneously broken SU(N) SQCD.

JUNE 2012 -  PhD Opportunities in Particle Physics with the ATLAS Experiment at the LHC at CERN

The IFAE group in ATLAS invites student applications for PhD positions in Experimental High Energy Physics to work in the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

IFAE, June 5th, 2012.  After the earthquake in Japan, T2K is still at the top of the neutrinos investigation. The T2K collaboration presented a better estimation of the oscillation measurement between muonic and electronic neutrinos at the Neutrino 2012 conference, held in Kyoto from the 3rd to 9th of June. These are the first results after the tremendous earthquake occurred in Japan in 2011, when the T2K collaboration was going to release to the scientific community the first direct observation of the third type of oscillation between neutrino families. The Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE) in Barcelona and the Instituto de Física Corpuscular (IFIC) in Valencia play a leader role inside the international collaboration T2K. This experiment is now in an advanced position in the competition to establish whether the neutrinos are good candidates to explain the universe matter-antimatter asymmetry.

Flavor Physics within and beyond the SM: present status and future perspectives

Abstract:

We summarize the present status of our knowledge of flavor within and beyond the SM giving particular emphasis on its phenomenological aspects. Possible hints for New Physics, like CP violation in charm and B systems, are outlined and interpreted within specific beyond SM scenarios monitoring, at the same time, their implications in other correlated low energy observables.

 

Closing in on Asymmetric Dark Matter

I will first provide an overview of the Asymmetric Dark Matter (ADM) framework. Following this I shall argue that experimental constraints strongly suggest that in models of ADM the dark matter must be part of a richer hidden sector of interacting states. This talk is based mainly on arXiv:1203.4854.
