JUNE 2012 -  PhD Opportunities in Particle Physics with the ATLAS Experiment at the LHC at CERN

The IFAE group in ATLAS invites student applications for PhD positions in Experimental High Energy Physics to work in the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

IFAE, June 5th, 2012.  After the earthquake in Japan, T2K is still at the top of the neutrinos investigation. The T2K collaboration presented a better estimation of the oscillation measurement between muonic and electronic neutrinos at the Neutrino 2012 conference, held in Kyoto from the 3rd to 9th of June. These are the first results after the tremendous earthquake occurred in Japan in 2011, when the T2K collaboration was going to release to the scientific community the first direct observation of the third type of oscillation between neutrino families. The Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE) in Barcelona and the Instituto de Física Corpuscular (IFIC) in Valencia play a leader role inside the international collaboration T2K. This experiment is now in an advanced position in the competition to establish whether the neutrinos are good candidates to explain the universe matter-antimatter asymmetry.

Flavor Physics within and beyond the SM: present status and future perspectives

Abstract:

We summarize the present status of our knowledge of flavor within and beyond the SM giving particular emphasis on its phenomenological aspects. Possible hints for New Physics, like CP violation in charm and B systems, are outlined and interpreted within specific beyond SM scenarios monitoring, at the same time, their implications in other correlated low energy observables.

 

Closing in on Asymmetric Dark Matter

I will first provide an overview of the Asymmetric Dark Matter (ADM) framework. Following this I shall argue that experimental constraints strongly suggest that in models of ADM the dark matter must be part of a richer hidden sector of interacting states. This talk is based mainly on arXiv:1203.4854.

We present the new hadronic currents implemented in the Monte Carlo generator TAUOLA, which is the standard library for analysing tau lepton measurements: both in high-energy experiments (such as LHC) and in the heavy-flavour factories (BaBar and Belle and future super-B).

For a narrow band of values of the top quark and Higgs boson masses, the Standard Model Higgs potential can develop a false minimum at energies of about 10^15-10^16 GeV, where primordial Inflation could have happened.
