Asymptotic safety

Friday March 25th, 14:30 hs. - Seminar room

Speaker: Roberto Percacci (SISSA & INFN, Trieste)

Abstract:

I will review the notion of nonperturbative renormalizability and possible applications to the physical world.

COLLOQUIUM - Nanoscience and nanotechnology at a glance

Monday, March  28th 2011, 11 am - Seminar room

Speaker: Jordi Pascual  ICN, UAB

Abstract: In this talk I will review some of the fundamental ideas that lie behind nanotechnology, the science and technology that investigate the new properties of matter that arise from the peculiar behavior at the nanoscale.

First results from the T2K experiment

Monday  March 21st, 12:00hs - Seminar room

Speaker:  Claudio Giganti (IFAE/CPAN)

Abstract:

The 1rst results from the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment based on the  results from the 2010 run are discussed. The neutrino electron appearance and muon neutrino disappearance channels will be presented.

Flavour antisymmetry and new physics in the early LHC era

Friday March 18th 14:30hs - Seminar room

Speaker: Ben Gripaios  (CERN, Geneva)

Abstract:

I discuss new physics which may be observable in the current LHC run, but which is safe from the many existing constraints from flavour physics, etc.

Searching for new physics in top-pair and four-top production at the LHC

Friday March 11th, 14:30hs.

Speaker: Geraldine Servant

Abstract:

The top quark is expected to play a special role in electroweak symmetry breaking. It is therefore natural to use top quark observables to test the mechanism responsible for EW breaking and more generally to search for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Low Energy Aspects of Conformal Technicolor with Weak Scale SUSY

Friday Februrary 25th, 14.30hs - Seminar room

Speaker : Jamison Galloway  (U. La Sapienza, Rome & U. of California, Davis)

Abstract:

I will review the motivation for conformal technicolor, and discuss a new approach to this idea based on weak scale SUSY breaking. In the recent work that I'll describe, SUSY breaking is itself responsible for triggering a phase transition in a conformal technicolor sector.

Anomalies: the good, the bad and the ugly

Wednesday, February 23rd,  14:00hs -  Coffee room

Speaker: Francesco Riva

A not so Elementary Higgs

Monday February 21st, 14:30hs - Seminar room

Speaker: Christophe Grojean  (CERN, Geneva & IPhT, Saclay)

Abstract:

Electroweak interactions need three Nambu--Goldstone bosons to provide a mass to the $W^\pm$ and the $Z$ gauge bosons but they also need an ultra-violet (UV) moderator or new physics to unitarize the gauge boson scattering amplitudes.

Non-Perturbative Thermal QCD: Gluon Condensates and AdS/QCD

Friday February 18th,  14:30hs - Seminar room

Speaker: Eugenio Megias (Univ. of Heidelberg and IFT, UAM/CSIC, Madrid)

Abstract:

The theory of strong interactions is asymptotically free at high energies and temperatures, and this allows one to use perturbative methods to study its thermodynamic properties in this regime. Nevertheless close to the phase transition non-perturbative effects become very important, and usual perturbative approaches are not applicable.

GUT models from F-theory compactifications

Friday February 11th 14:30hs - Seminar room

Speaker: Timo Weigand   (University of Heidelberg)

Abstract:

F-theory represents a fascinating approach to non-perturbative string compactifications with 7-branes. More recently, I was appreciated that it is also a promising candidate for applications to phenomenology, combining some of the traditional strengths of both the heterotic string and intersecting branes.
