SEMINAR: Dispersive model connecting light scalar meson poles with their Regge trajectories

Friday July 12 2013, 2:30pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Jenifer Nebreda (Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics)

Abstract:
Our preliminary results on the study of the connexion between light meson poles and their Regge trajectories will be presented.

Seminar: Compositeness: an EFT framework and applications to collider physics

Wednesday July 10th 2013, 2:30pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Oscar Catà (LMU, Munich)

Abstract:
Given the large energy gap between the electroweak scale and the scale of new physics (expected at a few TeV), EFTs turn out to be an extremely useful tool to perform fully systematic searches for new physics at present-day colliders.

COLLOQUIUM: The muon anomalous magnetic moment, a view from the lattice

July 8th 2013, 12pm _ Seminar room

Speaker: Maarten Golterman (San Francisco State University, UAB & IFAE)

Abstract: The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon has been measured with very high precision at Brookhaven, and will be measured with even better precision at Fermilab.

SEMINAR: Emergent Lorentz Invariance from Strong Dynamics

Friday July 5 2013, 2:30pm -  Seminar room

Speaker: Oriol Pujolas (IFAE & Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona)

Abstract:
I will discuss the phenomenon of emergent Lorentz invariance in strongly coupled theories. Lorentz Invariance is imprinted by the renormalization group flow in most observables, such as the dispersion relations of composite particles at low energies.

THESIS DEFENCE: Search for new phenomena in events with one energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 and 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Friday July 5th 2013, 12:00pm - Seminar room

Thesis Defender: Valerio Rossetti

Seminar: Searching for spectral features in the gamma-ray sky

Thursday June 27th 2013, 14:30 - Seminar Room

Speaker: Alejandro Ibarra (Technische Universität München)

THESIS DEFENSE:  Optimized DarkMatter Searches in Deep Observations of Segue 1 with MAGIC

Wednesday June 26 2013 12pm - Seminar room

Thesis Defender: Jelena Aleksić

Seminar: Effective field theory of unstable top

Friday June 14 2013,  2.30pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Alexander Penin (University of Alberta)

Abstract:
We develop a new nonrelativistic effective field theory to describe the finite lifetime effects in the threshold production of top quark-antiquark pairs.

Seminar: A possible new phase in gauge-fixed Yang-Mills theory

Frinday June 7th 2013, 2:30pm -  Seminar room

Speaker: Maarten Golterman (San Francisco State University, UAB & IFAE)

Abstract:
The standard expectation is that gauge fixing cannot alter the physics in the physical sector of a Yang-Mills theory. In this talk, I argue that this may not be true: in an SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in which the SU(2)/U(1) coset is gauge fixed, we find that a new phase, with spontaneous symmetry breaking, appears to be a possibility.
