Neutrinoless double beta decay: Neutrino mass versus exotic contributions

Neutrinoless double beta decay is a very sensitive probe for physics beyond the standard model. Usually it is discussed only as a probe for the (Majorana) neutrino mass scale but, in principle, any model with lepton number violation can contribute to its amplitude.

After a fairly general introduction to double beta decay, this talk concentrates on "exotic" mechanisms for double beta decay and discusses some ideas on how to distinguish between them and the mass mechanism. It is interesting to note that the LHC experiments can put stringent constraints on certain type(s) of double beta decay short range operators.
