Fermionic Quantum Criticality from AdS String Theory

Friday,  May 6th 14:30hs -  Seminar room

Speaker: Koenraad Schalm  (Instituut-Lorentz for Theoretical Physics,University of Leiden)

We will argue that theoretical questions posed by experiments on quantum critical states of electron systems might be best answerable with string theory through the anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory correspondence.

MAY 2011 - New PhD student position for ATLAS-Pixels at IFAE

The ATLAS-Pixel group at IFAE is opening a PhD student position. The deadline for sending applications is the 27th of May 2011. The starting date can be negotiated but should not be later than September 1st 2011.

Galaxy Redshift Surveys : Using our local Universe to understand the accelerated expansion

Wednesday, May 4th 14:00hs  - Coffee room

Speaker:  Martin Crocce (IEEC)

COLLOQUIUM - Status of neutrino oscillations and sterile neutrinos

Monday May 2nd 2011, 12 pm -  Seminar room

Speaker: Michele Maltoni (UAM/CSIC)

Abstract: The vast majority of solar, atmospheric, reactor and accelerator neutrino data are presently well explained by the hypotesis that neutrinos are massive and that flavor conversion occurs among the three known neutrino flavors.

Compton Imaging: From Concept to Application

Wednesday 27 April 2011 , 2:30 pm, at IFAE seminar room

Speaker:  Dr. Laura Harkness (University of Liverpool)

Compton imaging can be used to identify and image sources of gamma radiation in a wide variety of applications including medicine, homeland security and nuclear decommissioning.

WISPy signals from the sky

Friday April 15th, 14:30hs -  Seminar room

Speaker: Javier Redondo (MPI, Munich)

Despite their feeble interactions with standard matter, the hypothetical WISPs (weakly interacting sub eV particles) can be significantly produced in stars and in the early universe, having a humongous impact on stellar evolution and cosmology.

Ghost Condensates, Galileons and Supersymmetry

Friday April 1st, 14:30hs - Seminar room

Speaker: Jean-Luc Lehners (Max Planck, Albert Einstein Institute, Golm)

Ghost condensate and galileon theories are of considerable interest since they allow for stable violations of the null energy condition.

Composite Unification

Wednesday March 30th 14:00hs - Coffee room

Speaker : Michele Frigerio

I will entertain the possibility of a TeV scale composite sector, that account at the same time for electroweak symmetry breaking and gauge coupling unification.

Asymptotic safety

Friday March 25th, 14:30 hs. - Seminar room

Speaker: Roberto Percacci (SISSA & INFN, Trieste)

I will review the notion of nonperturbative renormalizability and possible applications to the physical world.

COLLOQUIUM - Nanoscience and nanotechnology at a glance

Monday, March  28th 2011, 11 am - Seminar room

Speaker: Jordi Pascual  ICN, UAB

Abstract: In this talk I will review some of the fundamental ideas that lie behind nanotechnology, the science and technology that investigate the new properties of matter that arise from the peculiar behavior at the nanoscale.
