The "Institut de Física d'Altes Energies" (IFAE) in Barcelona announces the opening of two predoctoral positions for outstanding young graduates interested in working towards a PhD thesis at IFAE. These positions are funded by the "La Caixa" Foundation under the Severo Ochoa Program for Scientific Excellence, a distinction awarded to IFAE.

The IFAE Engineering team is composed of Engineers and Technicians specialized in developing cutting edge technology for high energy physics, astroparticles and cosmology experiements. In our labs we have developed telescope cameras, detectors for the Large Hadron Collider, mechanics for satellite and ground telescopes, and microelectronics for different applied physics devices.

We specialize in front-end and read-out electronics, control systems, detectors, cryogenics & vacuum and precise moviments. Here you can find our main infraestructures.

1. Microelectronic Clean Room

It consists of three rooms of a controlled contamination area with a low level of environmental pollutants and ESD protection. This make the proper conditions to work for Microelectronics assemblies and packaging. Two of approximately 12 square meters of classes 1.000 and 10.000 and one class 100.000 of about 20 square meters. The clean room has a wire-bonding machine model Delvotec 64000G5, a "solder-ball" machine Bumper SB-M, a pull tester machine DAGE 4000 to evaluate the quality of the micro-threads and different type of welds, a high resolution Xray scanner Dage Ruby XD7600NT, a pick & place and dispensing system Finetech Pico, as well as with a vacuum reflux oven (AVT), Probe Station, digital high resolution Leica microscope, and stereo microscope.  

2. Mechanical Workshop

The mechanical workshop has 300 square meters and is equipped with precision mechanical work machinery: Johnford VMC 1300 CNC with FANUC control and Phoenix FM-250 CNC, Lagoon FTV4-SP milling machine, Pinocho S90 / 225 lathe, surface grinder machine DANOBAL RTC-800, EDM wire cutting machine ONA, EDM die sinking machine ONA, welding equipment in aluminum and steel , ultrasonic cleaning, metrology arm FARO PRIME and XY metrology table to scan surfaces with an accuracy in x-y better than 5 um and in z of 1 um . It is provided with a 16 ton crane bridge. The IFAE also has a 3D FDM printer and a 3D scanner.  

3. Electronics Laboratoy

It consists of a space of 70 square meters divided into two rooms. It has test equipment (oscilloscopes, function generators, logic analyzer), welding equipment of electronic components (soldering irons and furnace) with the ability to reveal PCBs by chemical attack on two sides.  

4. Instrumentation Clean Room

It has a space of 35 square meters. The main puropose are mechanical assemblies done under controlled contamination area with a low level of environmental pollutants and ESD protection. It is divided into two rooms of similar size and with the same qualification 10,000. It has an entrance SAS, approximately 7 square meters. Temperature: 22ºC + -3º C. Humidity: Controllable humidity value of 55% + - 10% and with the ability to set individually each of the 2 divisions of the room. It has access control.  

5. Optical Room

The IFAE`s optical room is equipped with an 1.2 x 2.5 m Thorlabs Nexus optical table with active isolators legs suitable for interferometric measures. It include the basic mounting hardware and the optical devices to perform radiometry and spectrometry in the range from 200 nm up to 3 um, which include among others monochromator, lamp sources, filter wheels and filters set, integration sphere, power meter and NIST calibrated photodiodes, etc. Currently, the optical room host the optical setups developed for CCD and IR detectors characterization demanded by the instrumentation being developed at IFAE.  

6. Grey Room

The gray room has a dimension of approximately 7x8 square meters. The main puropose is an electronic laboratory in order to work with detectorsunder controlled contamination area with a low level of environmental pollutants and ESD protection. It consists of an entry SAS and a single room class 1,000,000. Stabilized temperature at 22ºC + -3ºC and limited humidity below 75%. It has SAS and access control.  

7. Shielded Room

The screened room has a dimension of about 32 square meters, with an internal room height of 3.5 meters. The access door is 1.8m wide by 3.3 meters high. It is a double-leaf door with pneumatic action for the entry of both personnel and material. The room offers attenuation in the frequency range from 10kHz to 20GHz in accordance with EN 50147-1. The room has RF protected inputs for the ventilation system and also inputs for the connection of equipment (SMA type connectors, fiber optic inputs and pipes for air and water inlet for cooling equipment).
