Friday April 30, 14:30 - IFAE seminar room

Speaker: Gregory Soyez (CERN, Geneva)

Jets, naively seen as collimated bunches of particles, are very useful tools at hadronic colliders. The major part of the talk will tackle a basic question: how can we define the jets from the particles in an event? In that perspective, I will review the definitions used over the last decades and show that

APRIL 2011 - First W boson candidate event in ATLAS

First W boson candidate event in ATLAS First candidate for an event with a W boson decaying to muon + neutrino seen in 7 TeV collision data.

APRIL 2010 - First source discovered with MAGIC II

The MAGIC Collaboration reports the discovery of VHE gamma-ray emission from the new source MAGIC J0317+413. The source was in the field of view of the MAGIC telescopes between October 2009 and February 2010.

Phenomenology of Neutrino Masses

Speaker: Federico Sanchez (IFAE)
Mon 12 April, 12:00 -  IFAE seminar room

Neutrinos were thought to be massless for many decades. The discovery of neutrino oscillations at the end of the nineties proved the contrary. Since then, many experiments have been trying to understand these phenomena.

Meson Mixing and Decay in the MSSM at two loops

Speaker: Javier Virto (Univ. 'La Sapienza' & INFN, Rome)
Friday, March 5th 2010, 14.30h - IFAE Seminar Room

G-2 of the Muon: Touchstone of the Standard Model, Keyhole to New Physics

Speaker: Thomas Teubner - Liverpool University

Tsukuba, February 24, 2010. Physicists from the Japanese-led multinational T2K collaboration announced today that they had made the first detection of a neutrino which had travelled all the way under Japan from their neutrino beamline at the J-PARC facility in Tokai village (about an hour north of Tokyo by train) to the gigantic Super- Kamiokande underground detector near the west coast of Japan, 295 km (185 miles) away from Tokai.

FEBRUARY 2010 - First Super-K beam neutrino candidate

Physicists from the Japanese-led multi-national T2K neutrino collaboration announce on February 24th that he first beam neutrino event candidate has been observed. It is a clear 3-ring Fully Contained event in the fiducial volume.

Unification and Gauge Mediation

Speaker: Stephane Lavignac (IPhT, Saclay)
Friday February 19th, 14:30h, IFAE Seminar Room

Soft-Wall Models by Joan Antoni Cabrer

Wednesday February 17th, 14:00, IFAE Multifunctional room

I will describe the general properties of five-dimensional soft-wall models and their applications. I will show how, in a particular class of these models, one can generate a large UV/IR hierarchy with virtually no fine-tuning (arXiv:0907.5361). Finally, I will comment on how EWSB can be modeled in this kind of models.
