GUT models from F-theory compactifications

F-theory represents a fascinating approach to non-perturbative string compactifications with 7-branes. More recently, I was appreciated that it is also a promising candidate for applications to phenomenology, combining some of the traditional strengths of both the heterotic string and intersecting branes.

These properties of F-theory have turned out particularly favourable in the context of GUT phenomenology. In this talk we review some of the basic concepts of F-theory as such and of the construction of F-theory GUT models. After a general introduction to F-theory we describe the localisation of matter and couplings. We review some of the most salient features of SU(5) GUT model building such as gauge symmetry breaking via fluxes and proton decay. While many phenomenological applications are sensitive only to the local structure of the GUT brane, we stress the importance of global constraints, in particular in the context of U(1) selection rules. This brings us to the concept of the U(1) restricted Tate model and to the construction of global F-theory compactifications.
