Compton Imaging: From Concept to Application

Wednesday 27 April 2011 , 2:30 pm, at IFAE seminar room

Speaker:  Dr. Laura Harkness (University of Liverpool)

Compton imaging can be used to identify and image sources of gamma radiation in a wide variety of applications including medicine, homeland security and nuclear decommissioning.

In this technique, Compton kinematics are employed to reconstruct the paths of incident gamma rays using the interaction positions and energy depositions within a detector system, to identify the location of the radiation source. A resurgence of research activity is currently under way due to developments in detector technology, readout electronics and image reconstruction algorithms, factors which previously limited the system performance. The concept of Compton imaging and example applications for this technology will be outlined. The use of Monte-Carlo techniques in system design will also be described.
