First results from the Double Chooz experiment

Monday December 19, 14:30hs - Seminar room

Speaker: Pau Novella (CIEMAT) that has been very active in the analysis of the data.

Abstract :

The Double Chooz experiment started the data taking on April 2011, operating the far detector placed 1.05 km away from the nuclear cores of the power plant of Chooz (France).

After 5 months of data taking, first results have been released showing an indication of electron antineutrino disappearance consistent with neutrino oscillation.  According to preliminary analysis, the best fit value for  sin2(2theta13) is found to be 0.085±0.029(stat)±0.042(syst) at 68% CL, while the no oscillation hypothesis can be excluded at 93% CL. By combining the Double Chooz results with the T2K ones, theta13=0 can be excluded at 3 sigma. The near detector of Double Chooz, located 400 m away from the cores, will be operative by early 2013 improving the sensitivity of the experiment up to sin2(2theta13)=0.03 at 90% CL.
