OCTOBER 2012 - The Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE) has been awarded with a “Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence” distinction

In recognition for its outstanding role in experimental particle physics at international level, the nstitut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE) has been awarded with a “Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence” distinction.

• The Secretariat of Research, Development and Innovation has published today the resolution which accredits IFAE as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence, after obtaining the highest score given by the international scientific evaluation committee.

• This accreditation, which is valid for four years, will provide IFAE a million euro per year, and will reinforce the strategic lines of the center (high energy physics, astroparticle physics and cosmology) as well as its leadership within the international collaborations to which it belongs.

The Secretariat of Research, Development and Innovation announced this Friday the Severo Ochoa Programme 2012 resolution, which this year recognizes IFAE as one of the best research centers in the world of theoretical and experimental particle physics. IFAE is a consortium between the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and is one of the centers belonging to the CERCA program, promoted by the Generalitat de Catalunya.

In the evaluation carried out by an international scientific committee integrated by 70 researchers leaders in their fields, IFAE has achieved the highest score (100 points) in recognition of its participation and leadership in experiments such as ATLAS (at CERN), the MAGIC telescope (in the Canary Islands) and the future CTA project. International experts consider that the Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence accreditation will enable IFAE to consolidate and strengthen its leadership in the international arena. The committee supports the research program presented by the institute in its candidacy.

The following centers have also been recognized in the same call: the Centre for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona, the Doñana Biological Station (CSIC), the Institute for Theoretical Physics (UAM/CSIC), and the Institute of Chemical Technology (UPV/CSIC).
