COLLOQUIUM: Leptogenesis

Monday November 4 2013, 12:00pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Thomas Hambye (U Libre de Bruxelles)

Abstract:

After briefly reviewing what we know about the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe as of today, one will explain at length how the origin of the neutrino masses could also constitute the dynamical origin of this asymmetry.

SEMINAR: Flavorful Naturalness

Friday October 25 2013, 2:30pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Gilad Perez (CERN)

Abstract:
The notion of top partner as the object that cancel the top quadratic divergence of the Higgs mass square is discussed.

Seminar: Flavour and high-pT physics in the precision era of the LHC

Thursday October 31 2013, 2:30pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Lars Hofer (IFAE)

Abstract:
Several topics of flavour and high-pT physics are discussed: In the flavour-part of the talk I present a scenario within the MSSM (Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model) in which the light quark masses and the off-diagonal CKM elements are generated radiatively through the trilinear A-terms.

Seminar: Finite Theories Before and After the Discovery of a Higgs Boson at the LHC

Friday October 18 2013, 2:30pm - Seminar room

Speaker: George Zoupanos (National Technical University Athens & IFT Madrid)

Abstract:
Finite Unified Theories (FUTs) are N = 1 supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) which can be made finite to all-loop orders, based on the principle of reduction of couplings, and therefore are provided with a large predictive power.

Seminar: Hot topics in heavy-flavor physics

Tuesday October 8th 2013, 2:30pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Diego Guadagnoli (LAPTh Annecy)

Abstract:
I present an overview of the (major) progress recently made by experiment on various Bd- and Bs-meson decays.

Seminar: The Unbearable Lightness of Being: Direct detection of light dark matter

Friday September 27 2013, 2:30pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Felix Kahlhoefer (University of Oxford)

Abstract:
Motivated by the recent observation of a signal in the Si detectors of the CDMS-II experiment, I will review the difficulties of direct detection for light dark matter.

Seminar: LHC phenomenology of the minimal PGB Higgs

Thursday September 26 2013,  2:30pm -  Seminar room

Speaker: Leandro da Rold (Centro Atómico Bariloche & Balseiro Inst.)

Abstract:
A very attractive framework to obtain a light Higgs is to consider that it is a composite Pseudo Goldstone Boson of a new strongly interacting sector.

Seminar: Photons in a cold axion background

Friday September 20 2013, 2:30pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Domenec Espriu (Universitat de Barcelona )

Abstract:
A cold relic axion condensate resulting from vacuum misalignment in the early universe oscillates in time with a frequency m_a, where m_a is the axion mass.

Seminar: Graphene nano-photonics and carrier dynamics

Monday July 29 2013, 15:30 - Seminar room

Speaker: Frank Koppens  (ICFO)

Abstract:

In this talk I will review the new and strongly emerging field of graphene nano-photonics. In particular, I will show how to exploit graphene as a host for guiding, switching and manipulating light and electrons at the nanoscale.

SEMINAR: Features of higher-derivative scalar theories

Tuesday July 23 2013, 2:30pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Nikolaos Tetradis (University of Athens)

Abstract:
I discuss various features of scalar theories with higher-derivative terms in the action.
