The First Telescope on a Cherenkov Telescope Array Site Makes its Debut

On Wednesday, 10 October 2018, more than 200 guests from around the world gathered on the northern array site of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to celebrate the inauguration of the first prototype Large-Sized Telescope (LST).

Hoy miércoles, 10 de octubre 2018, más de 200 invitados de todo el mundo se han reunido en el emplazamiento norte del Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) para celebrar la inauguración del primer prototipo del Large-Sized Telescope (Telescopio Grande, LST por sus siglas en inglés). Se espera que el telescopio, llamado LST-1, se convierta en el primero de los cuatro LST del emplazamiento norte del Observatorio CTA, que está localizado en el Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos del Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), en el municipio de Garafia, en la isla de La Palma. El plan para la zona incluye también 15 Medium-Sized Telescopes (Telescopios Medianos, MST por sus siglas en inglés).

La Palma, Illes Canàries, Espanya. – El dimecres 10 d'octubre del 2018, més de 200 assistents d'arreu del món es van reunir a la seu nord del Cherenkov Telescope Array (Xarxa de Telescopis Txerenkov, CTA) per assistir a la inauguració del primer Large-Sized Telescope (telescopi de gran mida, LST). El telescopi, anomenat LST-1, serà el primer de quatre LST a la part nord de l'Observatori CTA, el qual es troba al Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, a l'illa de La Palma i gestionat per l'Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias. Un cop acabada, la xarxa nord estarà formada també per quinze telescopis de mida mitjana (Medium-Sized Telescopes, MSTs).

Protocol dealing with the contents and publicity for advertising job openings at the Institut de Física d'Altes Energies

1. Article 1. Contents of the advert

All advert will include, at least, the following information:

a) Number of open positions.
b) Job description and/or requirements and qualifications of the candidates.
c) Type of labour contract offered, including the length of the contract.
d) Full information of the documentation to be included in the application, as well as to where it should be presented.
e) An statement of IFAE's commitment with the principles of non discrimination and equal opportunities.
f) An statement as to where by applying to the job position the candidate gives his/her consent to IFAE to treat the personal data thus provided, and the commitment of IFAE to treat them according to the data protection legislation that may apply.
g) The opening and closing dates to submit applications, an estimate ending date of the selection process, and an estimate starting date of the contract. Candidates must have at least a weak to submit their applications following the publication in the media established in Sections a), b), and c) of article 2.
h) Contact data to submit any question or request of further information in relation with the job opening.

 

Article 2. Publicity of the advert

The advert will be published in:

a) The site established for this purpose at IFAE's website.
b) Research positions will also be published at the European Commission's "Euraxess" portal.
c) Non research positions will also be published at Generalitat's "Feina Activa" portal.
d) Any other media that might be deemed suitable. In this case, the advert may not include the required minimum contents, but it must refer to IFAE's website to obtain the full information.

ATLAS observes elusive Higgs boson decay to a pair of bottom quarks

The ATLAS Collaboration at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has – at long last – observed the Higgs boson decaying into a pair of bottom (b) quarks. This elusive interaction is predicted to make up almost 60% of the Higgs boson decays and is thus primarily responsible for the Higgs natural width. Yet it took over six years after the 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson to accomplish this observation.

Observada una desintegración del bosón de Higgs buscada desde hace tiempo

Seis años después de su descubrimiento, se ha observado por fin cómo el bosón de Higgs se desintegra en las partículas fundamentales conocidas como quarks bottom. El descubrimiento, presentado hoy en el CERN por las colaboraciones ATLAS y CMS del Gran Colisionador de Hadrones (LHC), confirma la hipótesis de que el omnipresente campo cuántico asociado al bosón de Higgs también da masa a estas partículas, las más pesadas de los 'ladrillos' que forman la materia tras el quark top. Ambos equipos han enviado hoy sus resultados para su publicación.
