Complementarity in dark matter searches

Friday November 25th, 14:30hs -  Seminar room

Speaker: David G. Cerdeño (Instituto de Fisica Teorica, UAM/CSIC, Madrid)

I will discuss the complementary role of the different experimental methods to search for dark matter.

H -> gamma gamma, revisited

Wednesday November 23rd, 14:00hs -  Coffee room

Speaker:  Rafel Escribano

This will be the first informal seminar intended to bring the experimental and theoretical groups closer together, with topics of general interest.

We won't forget to bring coffee and goodies (and keep the webpage updated)!

The neutrino oscillation story according to MINOS

Monday November 21st, 12:00hs - Seminar room

Speaker: R. Gran (University of Minnesota )

The MINOS long baseline neutrino experiment has been operating for over six years. In this talk, I will tell the current story of neutrino oscillations using the MINOS measurements.

Muon neutrinos disappear in a way consistent with a two-flavor oscillation pattern, are not substantially changing to a sterile neutrino flavor, nor decaying. There is the very interesting question of whether some portion appear as electron neutrinos instead of tau. MINOS sees a hint of an excess of electron flavor consistent with three-flavor oscillations. Further, because of the unique design of the beam and the magnetized detector, MINOS has measured the anti-neutrino oscillation parameters separately. Anti-neutrinos seem to oscillate with the same parameters of nature as neutrinos. This is currently the most complete exploration of neutrino oscillations by a long-baseline beam experiment, though the next generation of oscillation experiments is already underway.

Lepton magnetic moments: precision tests of the Standard Model

Friday November 18th, 14:30hs -  Seminar room

Speaker: Massimo Passera (INFN Padova)

I will start by discussing the recent developments in the electron g-2 and the present status of the long-standing discrepancy between the SM prediction of the muon one with the experimental value.

OCTOBER 2011 - End of 2011 LHC proton-proton run

October 30th marked the last day of the 2011 proton-proton run, ending a remarkable period from the data-taking point of view, with more than 5 fb-1 (inverse femtobarn) being delivered to the experiments. This is five times the goal of one fb-1, set at the beginning of the year  for the whole 2011 data taking period. After that a one-month operation period devoted to heavy-ion data-taking started, to complete the full physics program of the year.

NOVEMBER 2011 - Postdoctoral Position in Observational Cosmology in IFAE Barcelona

The High Energy Physics Institute in Barcelona, Spain, (IFAE, is looking for candidates for a postdoctoral position to work on observational cosmology with large galaxy surveys.

Very early cosmology: current understanding and future prospects

Monday November 7th, 12:00 hs - Seminar room

Speaker: Valery Rubakov (INR, Moscow).

With Big Bang nucleosynthesis theory and observations, we are confident of the theory of the early Universe at temperatures up to T≃1MeV, the corresponding age being t≃1second.
