COLLOQUIUM: That's the story": Prof. Roy Glauber remembers the making of the atomic bomb

December 15 2014 - Seminar room

Speaker: José Ignacio Latorre (Universitat de Barcelona), Maria Teresa Soto-Sanfiel (UAB)

Abstract: Nobel laureate Prof. Roy J. Glauber is the last alive scientist from the Theory Division of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos.

SEMINAR: Models with small cosmological constant at finite temperature

November 11 2014, 2:30pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Bithika Jain (Syracuse U)

Abstract : In 5D holographic realizations of spontaneously broken approximate conformal invariance, a naturally light dilaton can be obtained via the introduction of the small dependence of the 5D scalar potential on the field itself.

SEMINAR: Massive gravity from spontaneous symmetry breaking

November 14 2014, 2:30pm -  Seminar room

Speaker: Diego Blas (CERN)

Abstract : In this talk I'll present the first proposal to give mass to the gravitons from a spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism. In contrast to massive gauge bosons, both the broken and unbroken phases are not Lorentz invariant.

NOVEMBER 2014 - Black Hole Gamma-Ray Lightning

Black Hole Gamma-Ray Lightning

(Versió en català al final)

(Versión en español al final)

The MAGIC telescopes at La Palma have recorded the fastest gamma-ray flares seen to date, produced in the vicinity of a super-massive black hole. The scientists explain this phenomenon by a mechanism similar to that producing lightning in a storm. This result, with an important Spanish contribution, is published today in Science.

NOVEMBER 2014: Postdoctoral Positions at the IFAE Theory Group

Publication Date: November 3, 2014

Closing Date: December 21, 2014

The Theory Group at the Institut de Física d'Altes Energies (IFAE), on the UAB Campus (Barcelona), invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in Theoretical Particle Physics starting in Fall  2015. The appointment will be for two years.

SEMINAR: News From Muonic Atoms

October 31 2014, 2:30pm -  Seminar room

Speaker: Aldo Antognini (ETH Zurich)

Abstract : Muonic atoms are atomic bound states of a negative muon and a nucleus. The muon, which is the 200 times heavier cousin of the electron, orbits the nucleus with a 200 times smaller Bohr radius.

SEMINAR: Minimal Dark Matter and future colliders

October 27 2014, 2:30pm - Seminar room

Speaker:Filippo Sala (IPhT, Saclay)

Abstract : Electroweak multiplets constitute prototype candidates of WIMP Dark Matter, providing a useful benchmark to compare collider searches with direct and indirect ones.

SEMINAR: EFT approach to Flavour and Dark Matter

October 21 2014, 2.30pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Andreas Crivellin (U Bern)

Abstract : In this talk I review the effective field theory approach to physics beyond the SM.

COLLOQUIUM: Vade retro Standard Model Higgs

October 20 2014, 12:00pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Christophe Grojean (IFAE-ICREA)

Abstract: With the discovery of the long sought-after Higgs boson at CERN in July 2012, a new state of matter and a new dynamical principle have been revealed as essential building blocks of the fundamental laws of physics.

SEMINAR:Emerging Jets From a Dark Sector

October 10 2014, 2:30pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Pedro Schwaller (CERN)

Abstract : I will discuss a few reasons to go beyond minimal dark matter models, and some theoretical ideas that motivate us to consider a QCD-like dark sector.
