Lepton magnetic moments: precision tests of the Standard Model

Abstract:

I will start by discussing the recent developments in the electron g-2 and the present status of the long-standing discrepancy between the SM prediction of the muon one with the experimental value.

I will then discuss hypothetical errors in the muon g-2 SM prediction that might explain this discrepancy (none of them seems likely), and a connection between the muon g-2 and the bounds on the SM Higgs boson mass. This connection leads, via the precision electroweak tests, to a reduced Higgs mass upper bound. I'll conclude discussing opportunities and challenges offered by the study of the g-2 of the tau lepton.
