Seminar: Indirect dark matter searches

Friday March 15th 2013, 2:30pm - Seminar room

Speaker: Francesc Ferrer (Washington University, St. Louis)

Numerous experimental efforts to unveil the fundamental nature of the dark matter are underway, and several tantalizing observations have been linked to its effects in recent years.

We will review the properties of several candidates that appear in extensions of the Standard Model of Particle Physics: from light dark photons to super-heavy particles. Focusing on WIMPs, we will show how experiments are finally reaching the sensitivities to test whether dark matter is, in fact, made up of WIMPs or rule them out as its main component. Eighty years after the existence of vast amounts of dark matter was first postulated, its non-gravitational interactions might be soon brought up to light.
