MARCH 2012 - Postdoctoral Research Position at the IFAE Neutrino Group

The High Energy Physics Institute in Barcelona (IFAE) offers one postdoctoral position in the field of experimental neutrino physics.

IFAE is actively contributing to the neutrino oscillation experiment, T2K, in Japan. The experiment sends a neutrino beam from the east cost of Japan to the west cost where is detected at the Super-Kamiokande detector. The experiment is running since 2009 searching for the transformation of muon neutrinos into electron neutrinos. First indication of the existence of this transformation has been reported recently (Phys.Rev.Lett.107:041801,2011).



IFAE has contributed to the construction of the near detector tracking device based on a Time Projection Chamber and in the refurbishing of the magnet that provides a field of up to 0.2 T to the detector. The group designed and built the slow control and the water cooling pipping for the magnet. IFAE has also contributed to the software reconstruction of the TPC and the data acquisition system and it is actively involved in the development of physics analysis studies, including muon neutrino and electron neutrino spectrum analyses for the neutrino oscillation analyses.

IFAE neutrino group is involved in parallel in the development of a readout technology for time projection chambers based on electroluminescence. This readout technique optimizes the energy resolution while keeping the tracking properties almost intact. IFAE is commissioning a prototype to be readout with 25 avalanche photodiodes (APD) sensitive to light with wavelength around 172nm.

A successful candidate will contribute to the analysis of the near detector data in T2K including the development of the TPC reconstruction software and to the maintenance tasks of the time projection chamber and magnet for the near detector.
