Open Position Operator for the MAGIC telescopes

Opening Date:
Closing Date: Until Filled
Ref:PIC2021-GAMMA-1

The MAGIC collaboration has an immediate opening for a person to contribute onsite to the night operation of the MAGIC Telescopes.

MAGIC is a ground-based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescope stereo system with two 17m diameter dishes studying high energy phenomena in the Universe with high energy gamma rays above 50 GeV. The system has been operating in stereo mode with high sensitivity since summer 2009 and has been a leader in high energy gamma-ray astrophysics for several years. Further information about MAGIC can be found in this link: http://magic.mppmu.mpg.de/

The MAGIC collaboration has been operating the Telescopes since 2004 by sending operators from its institution members on a monthly basis to the MAGIC telescope site at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in the island of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). Recently a MAGIC Operations Specialist has been hired to be based at La Palma and participate on the data taking during the night. In view of the difficulties that institution members may have to send operators due to the Covid-19 pandemia, we are looking for an Operator that wil be based at La Palma and will participate in the data taking. The amount of nights to be covered will depend on how many other operators are available, with an average maxim of 10 per month.

Due to the international nature of the collaboration, a good English level is mandatory. Experience on operating telescopes and physics background are appreciated but not mandatory.

The starting date for the position is March 1st, 2020. The contract is a half time contract for three month.

MAGIC is an equal opportunity collaboration committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Women are particularly encouraged to apply.

The applications should send a CV to Oscar Blanch (e-mail: blanch@ifae.es ), Dr. Victor Acciari (e-mail: vacciari@ifae.es ) or Eduardo Colombo(e-mail: ehcolombo@gmail.com ). Names of reference persons are also desirable. Applications will be considered as soon as they arrive.

The above people is also available for further details on the position.
