Who we are

The Engineering department of IFAE is a multidisciplinary team with the mission to make the scientists projects a reality. We are in charge of the design and development of the mechanics, electronics and software for the instrumentation required for each project. IFAE-BIST is the Institute for High Energy Physics (Institut de Física d’Altes Energies) inside the Barcelona Institute for Science and Technology. At IFAE we conduct experimental and theoretical research at the frontiers of fundamental physics, namely in Particle Physics, Astrophysics, Cosmology, and Applied medical Physics. We are involved in the ATLAS project at the LHC at CERN, the T2K neutrino experiment in Japan, the MAGIC telescopes in La Palma, the Dark Energy Survey project in Chile, the ESA Euclid satellite, and the VIRGO Gravitational Waves experiment, among others. We also work at the cutting edge of detector technology developing pixel detectors for High Energy Physics, telescope cameras, and detectors for medical imaging and other scientific and industrial fields.

What we are looking for

We are looking for a C, C++ junior developer to work in the control software at the new LSST at Vera Rubin Observatory (https://www.lsst.org ). We are looking for a candidate with at least 1 year of experience programming in C/C++ with the ability and motivation for research, prototype, and refine designs to solve engineering challenges quickly, practical hands-on ability to create functional designs and a proactive attitude. The candidate must be fluent in English. Knowledge in Java and Python will be valued.

What will be your role

As a Junior programmer of the control software department at the Technical Division of IFAE, you will work in an autonomous way under the supervision of the Head of the Group. You will be integrated inside a team with engineers and it is expected that you work as a team member, proposing solutions and implementing them. You will work in an international collaboration of software teams within the Vera Rubin Observatory, participating in meetings and reporting to them. The engineering department at IFAE is a pool of engineers, so you will participate also in other projects like CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) or Virgo (Gravitational Waves), designing and developing software for them.

What we offer:

1 position.
Full time (40h/week). There will be a trial period of 6 months. Flexible schedule. Work with very interesting science experimental projects (scientific instrumentation, detectors, satellites systems, telescope systems, small experiments). Travelling to singular scientific infrastructures. Opportunity to gain engineering experience learning first-hand. Personal growth, innovation, and learning every day.

Salary will be in the range of 24K€, and can be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The selection process: Applications should be submitted to jobs@ifae.es and they should include a cover letter and CV. Sending CVs to the above address implies consent to the legal warning at the bottom of IFAE’s Home Page.

The application deadline is February 4th.

IFAE is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Women are particularly encouraged to apply. You may contact Otger Ballester (otger@ifae.es ) for any questions related to this job opening.
