Who we are

The Engineering department of IFAE is a multidisciplinary team with the mission to make the scientists projects a reality. We are in charge of the design and development of the mechanics, electronics and software for the instrumentation required for each project. IFAE-BIST is the Institute for High Energy Physics (Institut de Física d’Altes Energies) inside the Barcelona Institute for Science and Technology. At IFAE we conduct experimental and theoretical research at the frontiers of fundamental physics, namely in Particle Physics, Astrophysics, Cosmology, and Applied medical Physics. We are involved in the ATLAS project at the LHC at CERN, the T2K neutrino experiment in Japan, the MAGIC telescopes and the CTA - LST in La Palma, the Dark Energy Survey project in Chile, the ESA Euclid satellite, and the VIRGO Gravitational Waves experiment, among others. We also work at the cutting edge of detector technology developing pixel detectors for High Energy Physics, telescope cameras, and detectors for medical imaging and other scientific and industrial fields.

What we are looking for

We are looking for a junior control engineer, computer scientist, telecommunications engineer or similar education to help in the development of the slow control and trigger of a SiPM (Light sensor with a fast response) camera for CTA. We are looking for a resolutive person with knowledge on VHDL, FPGA programming, and c or c++ knowledge. The candidate should be organised and creative so he can find ways to test developments and propose solutions to the problems of the design.

What will be your role

As a Junior Control Engineer you will be part of the pool of Control Engineers of IFAE inside the technical division of IFAE. You will work in a semi autonomous way under the supervision and guidance of a senior engineer and the head of the department.

Your role main tasks will be:

  • Design a slow control solution for a light sensor custom board developed in house.
    • Taking in mind the solution has to be escalable to an order of thousands of sensors
    • Solution will be based either in FPGA (VHDL) or a microcontroller (C or C++)
  • Python knowledge will be valuated
    • To be used on the setup test of the slow control
  • Digital design of a Trigger system for the camera implemented in VHDL on a CPLD or an FPGA

As a junior engineer job we encourage recent graduates to apply. Formation on FPGA, VHDL and microcontrollers will be part of the job as long as there is a basic knowledge by the candidate.

What we offer:

1 position.
Full time (40h/week). There will be a trial period of 6 months. Flexible schedule. Work with very interesting science experimental projects (scientific instrumentation, detectors, satellites systems, telescope systems, small experiments). Travelling to singular scientific infrastructures. Opportunity to gain engineering experience learning first-hand. Personal growth, innovation, and learning every day.

Salary will be in the range of 24K€, and can be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The selection process:

Applications should be submitted to jobs@ifae.es and they should include a cover letter and CV. Sending CVs to the above address implies consent to the legal warning at the bottom of IFAE’s Home Page.

The application deadline is March 4th.

IFAE is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Women are particularly encouraged to apply. You may contact Otger Ballester (otger@ifae.es ) for any questions related to this job opening.
