Open Position PhD Position on IFAE Neutrino Group within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan – Funded by the European Union – Next Generation

Opening Date:
Closing Date: Until Filled
Ref:IFAE2022-PC6-1

Who we are

Long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments have contributed to the understanding of the nature of neutrinos since almost 20 years. Recently, they also allowed to measure for the first time the CP violating phase in the leptonic sector, which might help to understand the observed matter/anti-matter asymmetry in the universe. The IFAE Neutrino group is involved in the leading experiment of this field, T2K, since more than 15 years contributing to the design, construction and operation of the experiment. Currently the group has significant contributions to an ongoing upgrade of the experiment. The group is also involved in the preparation of the next generation experiment, Hyper-Kamiokande (HK), the successor of T2K, which will start data taking in 2027.

What we are looking for

A Master of Science (MSc) or equivalent degree in physics. Good knowledge of python and/or C++ as also ML techniques would be positively evaluated. The candidate needs to possess excellent English communication skills. The candidate should be willing to travel, possibly including to stay abroad for few months during his/her PhD.

What will be your role

The successful PhD candidate is expected to contribute to development of new Machine Learning algorithms for the event reconstruction in Water Cherenkov Detectors. To test the performance of these when compared to classical event reconstruction algorithms, the candidate will participate in the adaptation of the existing classical algorithms to the new detector geometry and the novel photo sensors which will be installed in the HK far detector. A smaller contribution to design studies of a possible near detector upgrade for HK might also be considered.

What we offer

  • 1 position.
  • Full-time (40h/week). There will be a trial period of 6 months. Flexible schedule. Work with interesting sc ience experimental. Travelling to scientific singular infrastructures. Opportunity to gain experience learning first-hand. Personal growth, innovation, and learning every day. The appointment is up to Reading of the PhD (with a maximum of 4 years).
