About IFAE

The Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE) is a public consortium of Generalitat de Catalunya, the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB, a public university) whose main goal is to carry out research and to contribute to the development of high energy physics from a theoretical, experimental and technological point of view. IFAE has the status of a “University Institute" attached to UAB and its premises are within the campus of the university.

About the Medical Physics group

The medical physics group at IFAE is focussed on the development of detector technologies for ionizing radiation. Advances in radiation detectors have allowed x-ray modalities, such as radiography or computed tomography (CT), as well as nuclear medicine ones, like time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET) or single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), to improve dramatically their diagnostic capabilities.
For the last 30 years, the medical physics group at IFAE has worked on applying new pixel detector technologies to x-ray modalities, PET, and SPECT. IFAE has direct access to the cutting-edge technology developed in international fundamental physics research collaborations such as ATLAS, CTA, or T2K, fully available in-house resources for the integration of high-density pixel detectors, and a team of engineers that provides a unique environment to carry over ambitious projects in this area.

Required skills

The successful candidate is expected to have:

  • A PhD in Detector Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field
  • Over 5 years of research experience after their PhD
  • Being awarded an international grant, such as European Research Council or National Institutes of Health awards, where his/her salary could be charged as an eligible cost.
  • Proven record of leading interdisciplinary projects
  • Outstanding communication skills in English

Other valued but not required aspects for this position are:

  • Experience or education in management
  • Participation in the organization of international events and conferences
  • Participation in peer-review processes of publications or grants
  • Participation in diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives

What will be your role?

The successful candidate will establish a new branch in the medical physics division at IFAE and is expected to lead the division at mid-term. In this role, they will be responsible for attracting funding to cover their effort as well as that of the members of the team.

Offered contract:

A Full-time (40 h/week) Tenure track (R3) position for the length of the international grant his/her salary would be charged to as an eligible cost (minimum 3 years), with a trial period of 6 months, with the commitment that a successful evaluation at the end of this contract would lead to the opening of a staff (permanent) position at IFAE. The gross salary will commensurate with experience and qualifications. The selected candidate is expected to join IFAE before December 31st, 2023. If the researcher is engaged in other existing commitments, the contract offered would be a part-time contract corresponding to the dedication to the grant funding his/her salary, so that the full salary would be an eligible cost. Flexible schedule. Work with interesting science experimental projects (scientific instrumentation, detectors, satellite systems, telescope systems, small experiments). Traveling to scientific singular infrastructures. Opportunity to gain experience learning first-hand. Personal growth, innovation, and learning every day.

Application and Selection process:

Applications should be submitted to jobs@ifae.es stating the job reference (2023/R/07/MedPhys) as the Subject of the message. The mail should include a cover letter and an updated CV. Sending CVs to the above address implies consent to the legal warning at the bottom of IFAE’s Home Page. IFAE is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace and social integration of people with a disability. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates. People from groups that are typically underrepresented in the labour market in general and in Science and Engineering in particular, such as women, minorities, or people with a disability, are particularly encouraged to apply.

You may contact jobs@ifae.es for any questions related to this job opening.

A Selection Committee will evaluate the received applications. If more than one candidate seems equally suitable for the position, the Selection Committee will arrange an on-line interview with each one of them as part of the Selection process.

In compliance with article 121 of the Spanish Public Sector Legal Regime Act, staff with a pre-existing relationship with the Consortium administration (Generalitat de Catalunya and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) will have priority in the awarding of the position.
