About IFAE

The Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE) is a public consortium of Generalitat de Catalunya, the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB, a public university) whose main objective is to carry out research and to contribute to the development of high energy physics from a theoretical, experimental and technological point of view. The IFAE has the status of a “University Institute" attached to the UAB and its premises are located within the University Campus.

About the Medical Physics group

The Medical Physics Group at IFAE is focused on the development of detector technologies for ionizing radiation. Advances in radiation detectors have enabled X-ray modalities, such as radiography or computed tomography (CT), and nuclear medicine modalities such a, like time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET) or single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), to dramatically improve their diagnostic capabilities.
For the last 30 years, the Medical Physics group at IFAE has been working on the application of new pixel detector technologies to X-ray, PET, and SPECT modalities. IFAE has direct access to the cutting-edge technology developed in international fundamental physics research collaborations such as ATLAS, CTA, or K2K, fully available in-house resources for the integration of high-density pixel detectors, and a team of engineers that provides a unique environment to carry out ambitious projects in this area.

Skills required

The successful candidate will be expected to have:

  • PhD in Detector Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field
  • Good communication skills in English
  • A proactive attitude and capacity for troubleshooting
  • Experience in radiation detector instrumentation and data analysis

Other valued but not required aspects for this position are:

  • Peer-reviewed publications as first author
  • Presentations at international meetings
  • Experience in international groups
  • Involvement in diversity, equality and inclusion initiatives

What will your role be?

The successful candidate will be part of a European funded project to develop a detector module for TOF-PET and will participate in hardware related tasks. This could include the study of different module configurations, the development of calibration/equalization algorithms, the integration of several modules into a system, and evaluation of the system with phantoms. Proactiveness from the successful candidate on how to carry out each of these tasks will be welcomed.

Contract offered:

A full-time (40 hours/week) postdoctoral position. The contract will be for one year with the possibility of extension for up to two more years. Remuneration will be commensurate with the individual’s qualification/experience. There will be a probationary period of 6 months.
