About IFAE
The Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE) is a public consortium of Generalitat de Catalunya, the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB, a public university) whose main goal is to carry out research and to contribute to the development of high energy physics from a theoretical, experimental and technological point of view. IFAE has the status of a “University Institute" attached to UAB and its premises are within the campus of the university.
About Port d’Informació Científica (PIC)
Port d’Informació Científica (PIC) is a scientific-technological center operated through a collaboration agreement between CIEMAT and IFAE research centers which is specialized in developing advanced tools and methods for scientific data analysis. We participate in research projects from multiple disciplines with challenging data environments, including particle physics, astrophysics, biology, materials science and others. Our main objective is to accelerate research by making data analysis more effective through the use of Machine Learning, High-Throughput Computing and Big Data techniques using distributed computing to support collaborative research. PIC is collaborating in several international research projects such as the ATLAS, CMS and LHCb experiments at CERN, the optical galaxy surveys DES, PAU, Euclid and DESI), the gamma-ray astronomy telescopes MAGIC and CTA, the neutrino experiments DUNE and T2K and the gravitational wave interferometers LIGO and Virgo. PIC also collaborates with many other research groups from different disciplines supporting their data-intensive research such as ALBA, ICN2 and ICMAB in material science or UAB and I3PT in genomics. PIC is looking for a highly motivated systems and infrastructure administrator with technical skills in linux and network administration and genuine interest in scientific research. The successful candidate will join the Operations team of the PIC data center and will work in close collaboration with engineers and scientists to develop, deploy and operate computing platforms to carry on the research data analysis.
Required skills and evaluation criteria.
The successful candidate is expected to have:
- Knowledge of Linux, Macintosh, and Windows operating systems
- Knowledge on one or more scripting languages, such as Bash or Python
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot storage, network, and OS problems
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as the situation requires
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with both computing professionals and end users
The candidate should be organized and creative so she/he can find ways to propose solutions to the problems of the software design, be flexible to accommodate changes, willing to learn new skills when needed, have hands-on attitude, and able to work in an international environment.
The evaluation criteria and the weighting for the submitted applications will be the following: Profile matching: 60 points.
- Transcript and studies: 20 points.
- Experience in similar research centres: 10 points.
- Candidate’s motivation: 10 points.
What will be your role?
The selected candidate will carry out software development tasks and support of computer equipment for Cosmohub, the IFAE’s line of action developed in the PIC.
