About IFAE

The Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE) is a public consortium of Generalitat de Catalunya, the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB, a public university) whose main goal is to carry out research and to contribute to the development of high energy physics from a theoretical, experimental and technological point of view. IFAE has the status of a “University Institute" attached to UAB and its premises are within the campus of the university.

About Theory Group

The Theory Group at the Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE), at the UAB Campus (Barcelona), is a vibrant international group working on the physics of the Standard Mode and Beyond, and Cosmology. Current members include R. Escribano, P. Masjuan, Q. Matias, S. Peris, and A. Pineda, together with a group of postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. The group has an extended research record on SM physics, QCD and its effective field theories, flavor physics, and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon from both the phenomenological and theoretical sides (check https://www.ifae.es/ for more information about the group). The previous areas are complemented with active collaboration with the experimental colleagues at IFAE working on colliders, cosmology, gravitational waves, astroparticles, and quantum technologies (check also https://www.ifae.es/ for more information about these groups).

What we are looking for

We invite applications for a PhD Position in Theoretical Physics starting in October 2024.

What will be your role

The PhD research topic will be along our strategic research lines: SM physics, formal aspects of quantum field theories, effective field theories, QCD, and flavor physics. They are part of the project Advanced Technologies for the Exploration of the Universe and its Components, in the area of Astrophysics and High Energy Physics.

Offered contract

• Full-time contract (40 hours/week).
• Temporary contract. The contract will have a duration approximately of one year.
• IFAE Professional category: “Investigador(a) predoctoral (R1)”.
• Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications within the corresponding category range
• The selected candidate is expected to join IFAE as soon as possible.

Required skills and evaluation criteria

Candidates must be enrolled or admitted to a doctoral program at a Spanish university, for the 2024/2025 academic year, o hold a degree that allows admission to the official doctoral programme on the date the contract is formalized. The start date of the contract will be October 2024. The process of evaluation and selection guarantees the principles of competition, publicity, and transparency. The recruitment of fellows consists of an open selection and the evaluation of candidates will be carried out according to the criteria of the call:

Criteria 1: Academic and / or scientific-technical trajectory of the candidate (up to 50 points): 1.1 Scientific-technical contributions (up to 45 points): The academic record and other curricular merits of the candidate.

Sub criterion 1.2 Mobility and internationalization (up to 5 points): The relevance and impact on the candidate’s research career stays in national and international centers and / or in the industrial sector.

Criteria 2: Adequacy of the candidate to the research activities to be carried out (up to 50 points).

However, candidacies will be accepted until suitable candidates are identified. The selection will be based on the academic and scientific record of the candidate, the recommendation letters, and the potential of the candidate to integrate well into the group. A Selection Committee will evaluate the received applications. If more than one candidate seems equally suitable for the position, the Selection Committee will arrange an on-line interview with each one of them as part of the Selection process. According to the laws affecting the public sector, priority will be given to candidates fulfilling the required skills with a current labour relationship with any of the Administrations of the consortium (Generalitat de Catalunya and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona).
