IFAE Receives Severo Ochoa Excellence Award in Zaragoza

On July 16, the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, and the Minister of Education, Pilar Alegría, presided over the official award ceremony for the 2024 Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu Centers and Units of Excellence in Zaragoza.

During the event, Mario Martínez, Scientific Director of the Severo Ochoa program at IFAE, received the distinction on behalf of the institute.

This marks the third time that the Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE) has been recognized as a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence underscoring its leading role in frontier research in particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology.

The Severo Ochoa accreditation strengthens strategic research planning, promotes best practices in scientific management, and enhances international visibility and talent attraction across Spain’s top research institutions.

A sold-out audience of around 300 people gathered for ‘Sota l’eclipsi: jazz i física de l’univers’, an outreach event supported by IFAE’s Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence programme. Bringing together history, fundamental physics and live jazz, the evening explored how eclipses have transformed our understanding of the Universe while highlighting the dialogue between scientific discovery and artistic creation.
