Tamara Vázquez Schröder participates in the launch of 'científiques 2026'
January 28, 2026
Collider Physics GroupTamara Vázquez Schröder, researcher in the Collider Physics Group at the Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE), took part in the launch event of the 2026 edition of the #científiques programme, held on 27 January 2026 at the UAB Casa Convalescència in Barcelona. The event marked the start of this year’s activities ahead of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated on 11 February.
Vázquez Schröder played a prominent role in the event, delivering a talk in which she shared her professional trajectory and her research in particle physics. In her presentation, she explained how the study of high-energy particle collisions contributes to expanding our understanding of the fundamental laws of nature, drawing on her work within the ATLAS Collaboration, one of the major experiments at CERN, while also offering insight into the everyday work of a researcher in a large international scientific environment.
In addition to her participation as a speaker, Tamara Vázquez Schröder is the campaign ambassador and public image of #científiques 2026 . In this role, she represents the spirit of the initiative and serves as a visible reference for young students, highlighting the importance of presenting close, real examples of women actively engaged in scientific research and helping to counter persistent gender stereotypes associated with STEM disciplines.

The launch event focused this year on the representation of women scientists in the media, addressing the challenges researchers face when communicating their work and participating as expert voices in public debate. The programme included contributions on media visibility, work–life balance, and structural barriers affecting women researchers, drawing on recent studies and professional experience in science communication.
The meeting brought together a broad range of participants from across the scientific, educational, and institutional landscape. Attendees included women researchers from different disciplines and research centres, professionals from the field of science communication, and representatives of public institutions involved in research, education, and equality policies. Through talks, moderated discussions, and institutional interventions, the event fostered dialogue on how to improve the visibility of women scientists and strengthen their presence in public and educational contexts.
The #científiques initiative is jointly organised by the Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació (FCRI) and the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST), with the collaboration of the Government of Catalonia. Since 2019, the programme has aimed to highlight the contribution of women to science and technology and to inspire young students by connecting them with active women researchers.

On 11 February, nearly 600 women scientists participating in the programme will visit more than 500 schools across Catalonia, offering talks to approximately 40,000 students in 6th grade of primary education and 1st year of secondary education. Through these classroom visits, the scientists will share their career paths and research experiences, reinforcing the message that science and technology are open to everyone, regardless of gender, and helping to build new scientific references for younger generations.
