  • About Me

I am an experimental physicist with more than three decades of experience in particle physics, cosmology, and advanced instrumentation. My career has combined scientific leadership in major international collaborations with the development of new research programmes and technological capabilities, through positions at DESY, CERN and, since 2007, IFAE.

I currently serve as Principal Investigator of the Euclid, ARRAKIHS, and Astronomy Detectors Characterisation group, and have led numerous national and European-funded projects in these areas.

Over the years, I have held key coordination and management roles in major experiments including HERA-B, ATLAS, LHCb, PAUS, and Euclid. These roles have involved leading multidisciplinary teams of 50–100 people across institutions and countries, with responsibility for coordination, delivery, and strategic decision-making during critical phases of detector development and operation.

A central part of my work at IFAE has been creating new research lines, infrastructures, and technological capabilities. I established the ATLAS Pixel Detector group and later developed the institute’s activities in space instrumentation, leading to IFAE’s first flight-qualified hardware. I also initiated its infrared detector characterisation programme, opening new opportunities in Earth observation technologies.

I have contributed to shaping IFAE’s strategy in gravitational-wave instrumentation and to expanding its experimental infrastructure, including the installation of a Thermal Vacuum Chamber (TVAC) for space applications, new microelectronics packaging capabilities, and the modernisation of its mechanical manufacturing facilities.

During my term as Director of IFAE’s Technical Division, I led a broad transformation of its structure and working methods, strengthening coordination between technical teams and experimental groups and improving the institute’s capacity to develop and deliver complex scientific instrumentation.
